SUMMARY:Portraiture in Charcoal with Michael Simms
DESCRIPTION:Due to popular demand\, Michael Simms is back with his charcoal portraiture workshop. Excitingly the workshop has been extended to two days\, giving students more time to develop\, practice and hone their skills under the guidance of Michael. \nIn this workshop\, students will learn how to draw the human face with charcoal – one of the most versatile and expressive mediums. DESCRIPTION:STAMP PRINTING WORKSHOP: Experience NERAM Museum of Printing and UNE Museum of Antiquities as places of inspiration for stamp making. \nJoin Black Gully Printmaker Rhonda Ellem for a three-Saturday experimental workshop designing\, making and printing stamps. \nDay one at NERAM Museum of Printing. Introduction to carving rubber stamps and making stamp pads\, and an introduction to using advertising blocks from the museum’s collection. Stamps and blocks will be proofed then combined with stencilling\, overprinting\, chine colle and collage. \nDay two at UNE Museum of Antiquities (UNEMA). There’ll be a talk by Dr Bronwyn Hopwood\, the Curator and Collections Manager of the recently refurbished UNE Museum of Antiquities (UNEMA). UNEMA is Australia’s only regional museum of Classical Antiquities and home to the nationally significant James Rivers Barrington Stewart Collection of Cypriot archaeological material from the stone age to the medieval period. The museum also offers displays from Africa\, the Americas\, Asia\, Oceania\, the 19th century and more. The talk will be followed by drawing in the museum taking anthromorphic and zoomorphic inspiration from the collections. These drawings will be developed into stamps back at MoP. \nDay three at NERAM Museum of Printing. Final printing onto postcards\, cardstock and found papers using repetition\, masking\, colour blending and progressive printing. DESCRIPTION:Join contemporary artist\, Leah Bullen for this workshop and discover oil monotypes. \nMonotypes are a hybrid process that combines drawing\, printing and painting. Often referred to as ‘painterly prints\,’ these images are created by drawing or painting with oil-based media onto a smooth surface. This image is then transferred to paper using a press. Unlike other printmaking techniques the resulting image is a ‘one off’ that cannot be repeated. \nIn this hands-on workshop\, you will be introduced to the fundamentals of oil monotypes. Participants will build images with oil paint and run the plate through the press to create monotypes. Leah will take participants through the basics of composition\, mark-making and printing. There will be time to experiment with different approaches to paint application including scraping\, wiping and layering. \nNo prior painting or printmaking experience is necessary and all materials are included. SUMMARY:Tufting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will create their own textile work to take home using the punch needle tufting technique. Exhibiting artist Natalya Hughes will lead participants through some of the techniques and processes she has employed to create custom textile works in The Interior. Participants will design their own motif to tuft\, extracting imagery from their experiences\, in conversation with the artist. \nThe Interior invites audiences into an exaggerated consultation room playfully furnished for psychoanalysis. A key feature of this installation is 7 rugs\, hand made by the artist with a tufting gun. Consistent with the content of the overall installation\, the symbols and motifs embedded in these objects are drawn from Sigmund Freud’s office and case studies. The textile design developed in this workshop by participants will be a motif drawn from personal experience.
