SUMMARY:Tufting Workshop
DESCRIPTION:In this workshop\, participants will create their own textile work to take home using the punch needle tufting technique. Exhibiting artist Natalya Hughes will lead participants through some of the techniques and processes she has employed to create custom textile works in The Interior. Participants will design their own motif to tuft\, extracting imagery from their experiences\, in conversation with the artist. \nThe Interior invites audiences into an exaggerated consultation room playfully furnished for psychoanalysis. A key feature of this installation is 7 rugs\, hand made by the artist with a tufting gun. Consistent with the content of the overall installation\, the symbols and motifs embedded in these objects are drawn from Sigmund Freud’s office and case studies. The textile design developed in this workshop by participants will be a motif drawn from personal experience. Punch needling follows the same technique as the mechanised process of using a tufting gun and is an inexpensive and accessible process to learn. \nThe workshop includes all materials\, including a tufting kit that participants can take home. \nVENUE | NERAM\, Mazda Gallery \nTIME | 10.00am – 12.00pm \nCOST | General price $33.00\, Friends of NERAM/Culture Club Price $30.00 \nMaximum 12 participants \n\n \nImage: Punch Needle Workshop with Natalya Hughes. SUMMARY:Oddity Part 1: KHR Stewart
DESCRIPTION:KHR Stewart explores the subliminal world of the subconscious in this exhibition\, drawing from life experience in collaging influential moments in time and personal relationships interspersed with the surreal. Moving to Lismore at an early age\, and then studying Architecture and Fine Art at University of Newcastle\, she completed her Fine Art studies at Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Whilst now based in Brisbane\, her work continues to draw upon her lived regional experience\, and that of her family more broadly\, intertwining natural and built landscapes with eclectic memory. \nOpening Night: Friday 7 February\, 6-8pm (opening remarks 6pm) \nImage credit: KHR Stewart\, The Victorians (Giantess)\, 2018\, oil on canvas\, 85 x 70cm. SUMMARY:Dancing with Colour: Jamie-Lee Garner & Frances Edwina Powell
DESCRIPTION:A joint exhibition between local artist and potter Jamie-Lee Garner and Brisbane-based artist Frances Edwina Powell. Each embraces bold colour in their artistic practices\, imbuing their works with movement and dynamism. Garner creates her pottery vessels then ‘upholsters’ them with vintage textile offcuts while Powell mimics acts of daily pantomime with her collages reminiscent of Matisse. \nJamie-Lee Garner is an interdisciplinary artist that lives and works from her studio in the Northern Tablelands\, on Ngarabal country in NSW\, Australia. She received her BA in Architecture from the University of Sydney in 2018. By working across various mediums\, including ceramics\, recycled textiles and oil painting\, Garner creates work about the discovery of self in a way that aims to be accessible and most importantly delightful. \nFrances Edwina Powell is an emerging artist and arts facilitator based in Meanjin (Brisbane). She received a Bachelor of Fine Art (Studio) and Business (Marketing) from the Queensland College of Art in 2021. Powell often references figure drawing\, abstract shapes and colour associations within her work\, crafting collages and illustrative oil paintings that explore form and concept\, along with ideas of the body\, relationships\, performance and home\, primarily working on paper. Frances Powell is represented by Side Gallery\, Brisbane. \nOpening Night: Friday 7 February\, 6-8pm (opening remarks 6pm) \nImage credit: Frances Edwina Powell\, Ribbons and twirls! SUMMARY:Contemplations: Contemporary still life
DESCRIPTION:This exhibition of still life artworks offers a compelling exploration of one of the oldest and most enduring genres in art history. In contemporary art\, still life continues to captivate artists with its potential for experimentation and reinterpretation. Still life allows artists to engage with both the ordinary and the symbolic\, offering a meditative space to reflect on the relationship between objects and human experience. In today’s fast-paced\, image-saturated world\, still life remains a powerful vehicle for introspection and an enduring testament to the ability of art to capture the beauty and meaning in the simplest of things. \nFeatured artists include Andrea Gledhill\, Fiona Cotton\, Fiona O’Byrne\, James White\, Jodi Thompson\, Kate Durack\, Kir Larwill\, Leah Bullen\, Lucy McCann\, Michaela Laurie\, Phoebe Hillard\, Samantha Dennison\, and Simone Hale. \nOpening Night: Friday 7 February\, 6-8pm (opening remarks 6pm) \nContemplations Catalogue \nImage credit: Jodi Thompson\, Does my bum look big in this?\, 2024\, oil on ply\, 63 x 42cm. SUMMARY:Artist Talk: Helen Eager
DESCRIPTION:Join us at NERAM for an in conversation between exhibiting artist Helen Eager and NERAM Director Rachael Parsons as they discuss Eager’s survey exhibition Inner/Space. \n  \nHelen Eager has sustained a solo exhibition program for over three decades with her drawings\, paintings and prints. Over the years\, the shift from domestic interiors to pure abstraction has been a consistent evolution\, her love of colour and light a constant thread. \nHelen Eager studied at the South Australian School of Art in the 1970s. A Masters degree at COFA in the late eighties focused on large-scale works on paper\, which took her drawing to a new level. A residency at the Greene St Studio in New York in 1988 was pivotal as Eager’s work evolved towards pure abstraction. \nOver the past decade\, Eager has explored compositions using chains of triangles on fields of white. In 2012\, Eager was commissioned to create a wall painting for the Circular Quay entrance of the new Museum of Contemporary Art building. Eager’s work is included in all of Australia’s major public and private collections\, including the National Gallery of Australia\, Art Gallery of New South Wales\, Art Gallery of South Australia and National Gallery of Victoria. In 2022 Helen Eager’s projection “New York Sunday” illuminated the facade of the MCA during Vivid\, Sydney. \nA partnership with Utopia Art Sydney \n\n \nImage: Helen Eager\, New Directions\, 2005. oil pastel on paper.

SUMMARY:Fusion: Max Powell
DESCRIPTION:For Glen Innes ceramicist Max Powell\, fusion not only describes the ceramic process but the merging of ideas\, influences and approaches. Fusion also illustrates the ceramic process of changing clay and glaze with heat. \nPowell finds the natural world an endless source of inspiration and by observing the shapes\, colours and surfaces is where he begins when creating paintings and ceramics. The simple act of looking and exploring reminds us to slow down and to disconnect with all the craziness of modern life. \nOpening night: Friday 15 November\, 6-8pm \nImage credit: Max Powell\, Dolomite water bowls – Ripple series\, 2024\, stoneware. Using felted soap it is possible to get a creamy lather whilst conserving the bar of soap so it lasts longer. The felted wool is exfoliating and has antimicrobial properties. The felted layer shrinks with the soap and can be used for other purposes or composted after use. The felt makes gripping the bar or soap much easier\, saving on chasing the bar around the bathroom and\, in between uses\, the felt dries out saving on cleaning residues left by the sink.
