SUMMARY:All the Excellent Dolphins
DESCRIPTION:This new body of work by abstract artist Catherine Cassidy demonstrates her current focus on the long history of mark-making by generations of humans. The insistent history of marks\, glyphs and images\, and the urgent need to inscribe\, record and re-invent our worlds. \nThe exhibition title is inspired by artist Judith Nangala Crispin’s perspective on neurodiversity and the artist: why be seen as “a disabled wombat when you are actually an excellent dolphin.” \nA partnership with AK Bellinger Gallery \n  \nOpening night: Friday 27 September\, 6-8pm \nArtist talk: Saturday 28 September\, 10.30am \nAll The Excellent Dolphins Catalogue \nCatherine Cassidy Artist Talk Transcript \n  \nImage credit: Catherine Cassidy\, Edge 12 Gold\, 2024\, polymers on wood panel. SUMMARY:Women and Other Demons
DESCRIPTION:Maria Pia Mosquera is a Colombian-born artist based in Sydney. Rooted in the aesthetics of medieval and Latin-American colonial art\, her work wryly re-imagines the contemporary world through the lens of religious iconography\, mythology and folklore\, vestiges from a time when the power of the supernatural to intervene in our lives was taken to be self-evident. \nMaking use of oneiric imagery that challenges the macabre with whimsical humour and invites reflection on our everyday lives\, the paintings in this exhibition re-imagine depictions of women in ancient stories in order to engage with contemporary society\, which is only beginning to reckon with the misogyny that drives persistent violence against women. \nOpening night: Friday 27 September\, 6-8pm \nWomen And Other Demons Catalogue \n  \nImage credit: Maria Pia Mosquera\, Taken II\, 2023\, oil on board. SUMMARY:Artist Talk - Neerja Peters
DESCRIPTION:Join us at NERAM for an in conversation between exhibiting artist Neerja Peters and NERAM Director Rachael Parsons as they discuss Peter’s current exhibition Ley Lines. \nNew Delhi based artist Neerja Peters finds creating paintings through geometry and colour articulation contemplative and meditative. Her distinct visual language evokes synaesthesia\, perceiving beyond what is evident\, leading the viewer to self-discovery\, soul awakening\, and divine knowledge. Ley Lines\, Peter’s first exhibition in Australia\, presents several bodies of work and includes drawing\, painting and artist books\, that demonstrates Peter’s spiritual expression through abstract geometry. \n\n \nImage credit: Neerja Peters\, The Self 8\, 2023. SUMMARY:Packsaddle Lecture: Jackie Dunn - Alphonse Mucha: Spirit of Art Nouveau
DESCRIPTION:For the 2024 FT Wimble Lecture on Printmaking\, join Jackie Dunn\, Senior curator of exhibitions at the Art Gallery of New South Wales and co-curator of their current Alphonse Mucha: Spirit of Art Nouveau exhibition\, to explore the life and work of one of art’s great stylistic innovators\, Alphonse Mucha (1860–1939). Through his lithographic posters and illustrations\, Mucha created some of the most instantly recognisable and best-loved works in modern European art: the seductive\, sinuous compositions that formed a new language and defined the look of late 19th-century Paris. But Mucha was also a mystic philosopher and activist for the liberation of his homeland\, today’s Czech Republic. Together we’ll take a journey through his rich career to uncover the artist behind the famous images. \nYour ticket includes a welcome glass of sparkling wine. \nJackie Dunn is Senior curator of exhibitions at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. She is co-curator of the 2024 Alphonse Mucha: Spirit of Art Nouveau exhibition. Other major exhibitions she has curated for the Art Gallery include\, in 2023\, Kandinsky\, from the collection of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum\, New York; Desmond Lazaro’s Point and Line to Plane\, and Georgiana Houghton: Invisible Friends. In 2021 she co-curated Matisse: Life & Spirit\, Masterpieces from the Centre Pompidou\, Paris\, as well as the associated gallery-wide contemporary art responses\, Matisse Alive. That year she was also facilitating curator of Franklin Sirmans’ international video exhibition\, Family: Visions of a Shared Humanity. In 2019\, her Dora Ohlfsen and the Facade Commission led to a new commission for the Art Gallery’s heritage frontage and\, in 2018\, she curated The Lady and the Unicorn\, from the Musée de Cluny\, Paris. \n  \nThe Packsaddle Lecture Series invites leading guest speakers to explore aspects of Australian and international artistic practices and history. These informative and entertaining talks provide the community with an opportunity to explore themes and ideas related to some of our key collection areas. The annual lecture series includes the Howard Hinton Lecture on art history\, the Chandler Coventry Lecture on contemporary art and the F.T. Wimble Lecture on printing history and art. \n\n \nImage: Alphonse Mucha Reverie 1898 © Mucha Trust 2024\, colour lithograph\, 72.7 x 55.2 cm.\n

SUMMARY:Fantastical Scenes: Queering the Collection
DESCRIPTION:Queer lives and artistic practices are inextricably linked in Australia in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. As this exhibition demonstrates\, the collections held at NERAM are ripe with such queer stories and potentials. The words queer and queering are far from neutral. This exhibition seeks to counter ideas of queer as a category\, label or a fixed or knowable identity. Instead\, the collection of artworks in Fantastical Scenes explores queering as a way of being\, discovering\, re-interpreting\, resisting and making. \nCurated by Dr Ariella Van Luyn \nRead the Fantastical Scenes: Queering the Collection exhibition essay \nOpening night: Friday 16 August\, 6-8pm \nImage credit: Henri Van Noordenburg\, Composition XXXV\, 2015\, hand-carved inkjet print. This event will include the Launch of the University of New England Allyship report: \nBeing Myself at UNE: A report of the UNE Allyship steering committee \nThe launch of Being myself at UNE is the culmination of work that began with a university-wide survey in Nov 2021 which invited UNE staff\, students and alumni to share their experiences of inclusion\, both as people of diverse sexualities and gender identities\, and the wider UNE community. The survey findings and report form the cornerstone of efforts to acknowledge and support LGBTQIA+ people online and on campus\, as well as strategies and vision for building more inclusive spaces and communities. He is the 2023 Australian Poetry Slam Champion\, a proud father and grandfather and now lives with his partner on Darkinjung Country. But historical queer lives are not always visible. Compulsory heterosexuality\, the assumption that a person is heterosexual unless proven otherwise\, has meant biographers and historians sometimes overemphasise the need for proof of same sex relationships. The concern that imposing contemporary identities and terms on to past lives also means gender non-conformity goes unrecognised. This panel will explore the ways writers\, historians and artists can re-remember queer lives and read between the lives of archives and other historical narratives. \nMarina Jansen is a Melbourne based historian at Heritage Victoria and will discuss the challenges of finding surviving material culture (buildings and objects) related to queer people in the past. \nDr Ariella Van Luyn is an academic in creative writing at UNE\, and writes and researches queer historical fiction. She explores how contemporary artists and writers reimagine queer lives. Ariella is the curator of Fantastical Scenes: Queering the Collection\, that draws on NERAM’s collection from a queer perspective. \nJody Ekert  is a community advocate and events organizer from Tamworth. Her recent focus is on Tamworth queer history and the work of Vernon Marshall\, a German figure from the 70s. She has relaunched his work with the Hey Vernon project\, 50 years later. Jody is passionate about uncovering forgotten queer history\, fostering connections\, storytelling\, and supporting small town queer groups through their advocacy and events. \n \n\n1.00PM – 2.00PM\nLUNCH BREAK\n\n2.00PM – 5.00PM\nWorkshop Sessions – workshop tickets sold separately (not included in your festival pass)\nStill Life Drawing with Alun Rhys Jones – 2.00 – 5.00pm \nJoin artist Alun Rhys Jones in this engaging workshop that will focus on still life drawing.
